THE ROLE OF THE GOVERNING BODY

The Governing Body has three key roles:
  • To provide a strategic view of where the school is heading
  • To act as a critical friend to the school
  • To hold the school to account for the educational standards it achieves and the quality of education it provides
The governors work as a collaborative body and as individuals we have no power whatsoever. We make decisions as a group. To make life easier for governing bodies, regulations were changed a few years ago so that we could delegate some decisions to committees or groups on behalf of the GB. It meant that we did not have to call a full governing body meeting every time a decision had to be made. The governors at Linton are structured into four main groups and we work closely with the Principal and members of SLT and the bursar alongside a plan for the year so that all statutory duties are fulfilled leaving time to set the framework for strategic planning.
The four main groups are
  • Strategy
  • Finance and Personnel
  • Achievement and Inclusion
  • Business and Premises
Some issues or areas of development may need focussed governor involvement and in those cases governors will form a working party that would liaise with a key member of staff. Some governors have a faculty link and liaise with Heads of Faculty in order to improve their understanding and knowledge of the faculty and its priorities in its development. The governors provide support and work in partnership with the faculty. The chairs of the groups and other governors have links with key members of staff and have a regular dialogue with them to monitor and evaluate priorities for development. Governors always join an Area Review each term.
